The Sensation Box Elder Maple (Acer negundo ‘Sensation’) is a unique cultivar of the native North American boxelder, and it has a special connection to Idaho. About 40 years ago, Warren Carnefix, a nursery owner in Idaho, discovered the original tree growing near an abandoned homestead. Unlike typical boxelders, Sensation is a male clone, meaning it doesn’t produce messy seeds or attract boxelder bugs. It grows quickly with a rounded canopy, making it an excellent shade tree for Southern Idaho’s hot summers. In fall, or sometimes even earlier, its foliage transforms into brilliant shades of red and orange, providing outstanding seasonal color. Hardy, adaptable, and low-maintenance, the Sensation Box Elder is a top choice for Idaho landscapes and remains one of the most reliable and beloved shade trees in the region.
